It was one of those “sliding doors” moments, and at the time of writing, it seems to be working well.
Here’s the story of how I started Oliver Myles Marketing.
December 2014, I was in final selection process for an interim Chief Marketing Officer role for a recruiter. Both interviews I had gone, in my opinion, very well. The second interview was on a bright, yet cold December Friday, and I was expecting a positive outcome. There was a good vibe between the client and I, we were a good fit and I could bring a huge amount of benefit to their organisation.
That Friday afternoon passed without a call from the client, as did the weekend. Deep down, I knew I hadn’t been successful. On Monday, I was still being optimistic despite the feeling in my gut. Finally, I spoke with the client. My suspicions were confirmed. It was how he chose the successful candidate that altered the path of my professional career.
He explained: “We (the board) couldn’t separate either of you. So, we tossed a coin”. I was the unlucky one. Would I have accepted the role if I was offered? Of course I would. However, the likelihood is I wouldn’t have been aware of the events leading up to role offer. Let’s be honest, if I had known, I still would have accepted.
It was a brutal method of candidate selection. But I picked through the bones of what I was told and considered my next move. There was plenty to consider; bills to pay for, family to support, momentum of career to name just three.
With almost 20 years of marketing – both client and agency life – behind me, I am asset to any business looking to recruit me, my expertise sought after and approach thorough. Certainly, I’m better than being selected by coin toss. Everyone is.
In the end, the signpost was quite easy to read. Either continue with interviews until I found a role that satisfied my needs and values (and vice versa) or open doors for myself? In the end, it was an easy decision. I have faith and belief in my abilities, whilst also appreciating everyday is - and must be - a school day. The support from my family and friends was always there - whatever the direction.
On 24th February 2015, I started the journey as a business owner. As each day passes, my mission statement becomes even more defined. Now working with start-ups and SMEs, I’ve been fortunate to work with some superb professionals and their teams. I feel valued and arguably I’ve learnt more in the last two years than I did in any of the proceeding 20 years. Please do not misunderstand, this is not a denigration of the businesses that I worked for. In the main, most were very enjoyable and I delivered some superb marketing campaigns to delivered ROI. Yet, when in the corporate bubble, there’s no doubting you are shielded from real world challenges. In the last two years, I’ve seen first-hand the challenges businesses face and where I can add my expertise.
I’m not underestimating the task. There’s more twists and turns than a Robert Ludlum novel, but I feel invigorated and looking forward to each and every day. Never doubt the coin toss. It’s incredibly revealing and entirely definite.
